It's available on the Criterion Channel. You need to be a subscriber, or you could sign up for a free 7-day trial. www.criterionchannel.com/videos/le-silence-de-la-mer Criterion also released it on DVD and Blu-ray, so, if those formats are an option for you, you could check at your local library.

Fighting the writer is why almost always studios buy book rights outright. The writer has to take the money and disappear.

Altman once filmed some scenes across the street from where l started a new job. Stupid me - l should walked over to be an extra, but l didn't want to lose my job. I will always regret being that dumb, being that close to such a great artist and not sharing the moment. Kids - don't be that clueless and take every advantage of such rare opportunities!

Why is it that so many of the greatest screen stars of all time, seem to purposely and deliberately destroy their careers with all of the vices they can get their hands on? They all have these brilliant, immense talents, only to self-destruct by the time they reach their 40's. It would appear that it would have been better for Montgomery to just be himself and date whoever the hell he wanted to like Rock Hudson did. What a waste of great talent. Of course, his attitude did not help further his career either. I have personally seen so many lives destroyed by alcohol and drugs - even within my own family. I will never understand why people have all of these addictive behaviors. I thank God that I am not one of them. No amount of fame or fortune is worth dying at the age of 45 due to booze and drugs.

*This is in memory of Ivan Jandl (1937-1987), the young boy who was at the center of "The Search," Montgomery Clift's first movie. Jandl was one of the youngest recipients of an Academy Award--but was not allowed to go to America to collect it. After the Communists took over Czechoslovakia, he was persecuted to a certain degree for having taken part in an American movie.*

It is not true ,the times in the other documentary he references that she was walking off at different times was not because her arguments of the technicalities of the filming. In noted plural cases, she is vehemently defending herself over valid questions regarding her documented participation with the Nazis. It is clear her role was well orchestrated and now there exists a cadre of people wishing to rehabilitate her complicity.

This is one of my favorite movies, and it has instantly made me a big fan of Michael Haneke. Maybe some people would find the movie sad and unsettling, but, for me is a reminder that you have to try to enjoy your life with the people you love, and enjoy the little things; otherwise, living would feel like accomplishing boring, and senseless tasks.

I think she was firs an artist obsessed with her work. if she was not a genial filmer, she wouldn’t have been in trouble so much. We will never know all she did or did not. She should have gone tot the States and be a hero there. She refused to film as a war correspondent and I read that her films Olympia and Triumph of the Will received prices due to outstanding achievement in Europe on film festivals before the war. Then they were apparently good films. If she was a rocket scientist she would have been pampered by the Americans. What is not mentioned is the her special way of filming reflects what she learned from Rudolf Laban, great dancer and choreographer and the author of a language system to describe movement. I was educated by a pupil of Laban and Leni Riefenstahl was also a pupil of Rudolf of Laban, when she had her career as ballerina (she had to abort this career due to knee problems). In the first 5 minutes of Olympia I already recognized the work of Laban. Hist views on esthetics and movement in space…Sometimes I wonder what great film achievements we would have had if she was pardoned or rehabilitated in some way…

While some of the questions asked were inane, I don't think the general hate against the audience (as expressed in many of these comments) is justified. Even today, with the Internet and a handful of very good books available about Bresson, he's still a relatively esoteric director. Digging fully into his body of works and his methods is still somewhat of a research project. In '83 you would not have the availability of the media we have today nor the additional 40 years worth of insights and investigations into this fascinating artist. I also think its unfortunate how impatient Bresson gets towards the end - I don't begrudge him that but I would have loved to hear his thoughtful answer to the question about if he thinks any of his films have failed, from his perspective.

I understand that Buster grabs a dummy from the edge of the waterfall, but at some point he and the real Natalie are both hanging over it before he drops her off to the side. Very curious how they got that shot and how many takes it took. Just incredible stuff, and zero CGI.

  • @curtandoscar

Absolutely loved this detailed analysis. Love all the behind the scene photos shown such as the camera tower built by the waterfall. It's still such a stunning, insane stunt, with Buster hanging by the waste, upside down. Just nuts! I had no idea he had done several uncredited stunts for The Iron Mule.

Very sad biography of a very talented individual, whos abilities were subjugated by the passage of time n eras n personal tragedies....just as circumstances of the time made her a reknowned star so the changes of time, equally brought her down as fast as she rose.....But as a 1st in motion pictures she will always carry the persona she had for being the 1st.
